I Think oil should not be a traded commodity. We should pay for what this country uses and not worry about what is happening in other countries or what the price is there.

Gas prices are absolutely outrageous, and it is a shame what effect they are having on the overall economy... I shudder to think at the effect it'll have on summer tourism. For goodness sakes ppl will have to think twice about the trip to visit granny only a few states away...better hope granny has email or picture messaging, cuz it doesn't look like it's going to get better anytime soon.

I like that you brought attention to total housing costs. Just because someone can afford the mortgage doesn't mean that they can also afford everything else associated with owning a home. A good rule of thumb is to make sure all of your housing costs (mortgage, utilities, taxes, insurance, utilities, phone and maintenance) are no more than 38% of your spendable income.

This is a neat calculator that will tell you how much interest you will save by paying extra on your mortgage every month: http://www.crown.org/Tools/Calculators/Mortgage_PrePayment.asp

Great advise...with one caveat...

Make sure that you are putting that money you are saving to work for you. Whether it is an ING type of account, or money market, or making regular contributions to your Roth IRA, let that money work for you. Starting to save is the first step, but making sure that you are not just "putting it under your matress" is also very important.

I know that is what Moneywinks would do, I just thought I would throw my 2 cents in.

Personally I think that the government should ease the bans on drilling of certain areas of the United States. I am not saying that they should try to anger all of the tree huggers in this country, but we are sitting on some of the largest oil fields in the world, and using those natural resources would do a lot more than drive the price of gas down - growth in our economy could be a big reason to open up the regulations. I guess the spotted owl is more important than making sure some people's kids have enough food to eat! That may be a little drastic, but come on!
